Kernals

What are these things? I'm trying to install linux mandrake or caldera onto my pc, but I don't even get to the config screens as there's an error with a kernal (kernal32 I think?), then after that, my whole hard drive messes up.

I've not tried this for a few months, as I've not backed up since then :o Anyway to fix kernals?

I can try to install linux again tomorrow if you need to exact error message
