View Full Version : popout button from a navigation bar

I designed my site (using frames) with a vertical navigation bar on the left side. Now, my employer feels that there is too much text on each button, and that I should redesign each button to only have a general title and when it is moused over, another button with the subtitle should pop out to the right of it. Can you point me in the direction of some examples of code where this is done?

if it's a link you can use the title property or if it's an image you can use the alt property

I've got a script (http://www.brothercake.com/dropdown/) that can do this kind of stuff (http://www.brothercake.com/dropdown/interact_tutorial_demo3.html), if that's any help to you.

That's a great idea about using the alt or title properties of the image to act as a pop out for my buttons. However, these only appear when you mouse over a very specific part of the button, and the text is quite small. Anyway around this?

Another downside to using title and/or alt is that users can disable these. On the other hand, they can also disable scripts, so brothercake's excellent scripts won't always work.

Here's three ideas:

Convince your employer that users need the full text in order to understand the buttons.
On the home page (that is, the first page users will see in the content frame) include a list which explains what users will find with the various menu buttons.
At the bottom of the menu, add a menu help button which opens a page explaining the menu.
