Hi,

i am currently trying to sort out a problem for a friend. He as just bought the XBOX 360 and want to connect it to his other pc and the internet. The problem is that the xbox is in a different room to the pc and i have no wireless device that it compatible with the xbox itself.

So my plan is to connect a wireless router next to the xbox and use ethernet cable to connect the xbox to that. Then in the other room i use the wireless adapter connected to the pc, to connect to the router. i can then use ICS to allow the XBOX to use the internet connection from the PC.

I have plugged all this in and it allow me to ping the xbox from the pc and the xbox is assigned a network address. but when trying to connect to the pc it just fails and i cannot understand why.

I have two questions

if the IP address of the PC is 192.168.1.2
and the router is 192.168.1.1

should the default gateway on the Xbox be the same as the PC 82.xx.xx.xx or the PC's IP address (192.168.1.2)?

and..

is there any specific reason why this wouldn't work? any constructive critism will be greatly received.

i know that this is a little bit of a crazy idea but i am sure that it will work.

Thanks in advance!

No, the default gateway should be unique. The ip address of the computer shouldn't be the same as the default gateway. I'm assuming you are trying to use the XBOX as a media center. Make sure the router is assigning the ip addresses rather than trying to assign them yourself. I did this a while back. There is some software that needs to be installed on the host pc in order for the xbox to understand the computer. I think its called ZUNE but I'm not sure if thats the exact name. ok will check it out, let u know if it work 2morrow.

I had already been reading about having the router set so it only acted as a switch and not the dhcp server.

Thanks

If you can the easiest solution is the plug the internet into the wireless router, there connect the PC and Xbox to the wireless router. And then have the router assign the addresses as Aero said.

You can either put a wireless adapter on the PC or the Xbox and then connect the other with an Ethernet cable or make them both wireless if you want. Then you won't have to have the PC on to connect to the internet from the Xbox as well.
