I am preparing to develop an eCommerce site and would like some advice.
I'd like a good efficient backend (preferably php/mysql) and nice featureset and maybe a smooth AJAX frontend. Any initial suggestions would be welcome.

I have a good amount of experience with PHP/JS/XHTML/MySQL and database design and currently learning jQuery (and its wonders). I could and kind of want to develop an ecommerce system myself (yes i know it may be reinventing the wheel, but it would be MY wheel).

the part that i'm not too thrilled about is having to write things like Paypal IPN integration from scratch (yes i know there is a PayPal IPN php class and i'll be trying to use it), figuring out how to process transactions through different payment gateways (linkpoint, authorize.net..etc.)

perhaps i could take plugins/existing scripts/classes that are already made (similar to the PayPal IPN class) for a certain frameworks and adapt them to work for me. there are plenty of barebones php shopping cart scripts, jQueryUI can provide drag and drop functionality if needed along with AJAX handling etc.

large frameworks like OScommerce and Joomla seem to require a lot of learning/understanding of their code to be able to extend/customize well through plugin development.

I was reading about Shopscript and maybe that's worth purchasing and gutting if they give you a non-encoded version?

If you're not in a hurry to use in a production scenario then you might want to check out Magento. Its a shopping cart thats built using the Zend Framework. Have a look here at Magento Commerce (http://www.magentocommerce.com).
