I've used it and found it fairly easy to customize.
Has a lot of nice features ... but it's expensive.

The installation was easy too, and they do have
a support forum. In some cases, they have too
many options (like shipping charges) that took me
a while to figure out.

I used X-Cart Gold ... for this client:
http://throughtheflower.org/store/

The client wanted a black background, which was
very challenging to customize X-Cart for a black
background. Many CSS changes were needed.

so do you think it would be very difficult to make the shopping cart look like this ? http://img90.imageshack.us/img90/9207/onlinestorebg8.png as thats the store design i have being toying with for my site.

thanks

oh dear, another "black" website.

It is more difficult to do for these reasons ...

1) Their CSS style sheets are lengthy.
2) They have background colors already set to #fff (white).
3) They have text colors set to blacks, reds, dark colors.
4) Many of their .gif images do not have transparent backgrounds.

So, you need to do a lot of tweaking to reverse the colors.

You will have this problem with ANY ecommerce script (not just X-Cart).
The only saving grace might be if you find a "skin" or "theme" that someone
else has created (that looks the same).

I actually hate black websites myself (personal opinion) ... but if that's what
you want, you'll have to work hard for it. Count on spending a lot of time
tweaking the style sheets.

I've used x-cart on a number of my client's sites and it's worked rather well for them. I can also recommend you to try Product Catalog Builder (http://www.productcatalogbuilder.com/) for creating electronic catalogs. This program is very useful for e-commerce. You can read about advantages of its usage on program's official site.
