Page Minimizing

When you drag the right bar towards the left there are sites where the dragging just covers up the page almost like a window shade going left to right. Then there are sites where the data on the page gets crunched up as you drag the bar left to right. What i mean by crunched is ie 1 line of text collapses to 2.. then 3 as you drag the bar right to left minimizing the page.

My question is how is that done. How to shrink the page with mouse left to right and dont crunch the page.

Any help in thso regard will be appreciated.

This is liquid vs elastic and fixed layouts. Liquid is defined in percentages of the browser window size. Elastic and fixed are defined in ems and pixels respectively, so won't change if you resize the window.
