I bought a new Acer Aspire 5610 Laptop last summer with Windows Vista Home Edition. Will I need to download/buy SP1 or will it be added on free through Windows Update Utility?

Signed clueless...

Upon searching the net manufacturers have already gotten SP1 but it wasn't until about Feb 8th. MS won't be releasing the final build of SP1 to existing users until March some time. You can download it but you could only install it with a clean install of Vista. There are no official download links yet. When they release it in March though it should be able to just update your files.

Thanks and yes I have a clean install. It came pre-installed on this computer.

Thats not what I'm saying. I'm saying is that you can only install (currently) SP1 for Vista by doing a clean install meaning if you don't backup your files you will lose them.

Are they planning to have SP1 wipe the computer?

The current release for manufacturers will only install with a clean install of Vista. The update when released through windows update should be able to just update the current system files without having to reformat.
