View Full Version : $0Gig HD, show 8Gig of space

I'm running Windows ME.

I have a 40GB HD from a friend that doesn't seem to work. May have been running Win2k.

I format this HD and it says it has 8GB of space. The sticker on the outside says it's a 40GB HD.

I've tried Partition Magic to try and find other partitions, but there doesn't seem to be any more.

This HD was failing to boot on my friend's computer, I thought maybe a virus? I thought to format, then it'd be okay, but no.

What am I missing here?

All I can think of is that you fdisk it, and look for partition info. IT's possible there's a non-dos partition not being recognised through your software.

I've tried fdisk and it doesn't show any partitions. Someone suggested fdisk /mbr but that didn't do anything.

It sounds like a hidden partition (for a virus?), but I can't seem to get to it.

Maybe if I get a big enough magnet? :)

Any other ideas, please?

i know very little about formatting and partitioning, but if i remember correctly, then ME is still FAT32, and 2K is NTFS. possible that the missing space is NTFS?

So... if I re-partition... er... format using NTFS can I get the missing 32GB back? Maybe then repartition it to FAT32..

Sounds fishy, but I'll give it a try.

JustaMe, I've seen your post for google. I'm not sure if that's for my situation. My regular HD is a 30GB and works fine. Maybe 40GB is the magick number?
