I had a problem about a few weeks ago that when I started up my computer, it would start to load windows, and then, I would see my task bar, but it would disapear. And all I could do is (I am on Windows 2000 pro) hit "CTRL+ALT+DELETE" and get my options in there, I could start up explorer again but it would disapear again, and the MEM Usage would start increasing. I didn't understand what was going on, so I thought it was a computer error, becuase Norton A-V didn't see anything, and I formated. Problem fixed.. for now.
I then had a problem as I was starting to get into reinstalling everything. But it was a new problem, everytime I started up the computer, it would shutdown, and restart. Right as the desktop starts to show itself, that happens, and I have no idea why! I thought it was the ram, I took the ram out, and was left with 96MB of ram (as it said). (Those two chips were the big ones) It seemed to work fine. Lower Ram, I couldn't do anything big or fast, so I was happy for then.
That means I thought 192MB of ram was bad, and I gave it to my dad to test it with a friend at work, and he said the ram was fine which got me confused. So I will get the ram back soon, and will not have a problem with it? Who knows yet.
Todays problem. I woke up, my computer was on, I saw I got a virus alert for an IRC Trojan. If it can't fix it, or delete it, it stops it form being in use at all. So I figured it was all fixed.
I played some Counter-Strike, and got alot of lag in the 1000s and so I left. I then opened my task manager to see what was up, there were two explorers! I closed them both, and my desktop went black. I then entered a new task, and nothing happened. I got scared cause this part happened before. And I restarted.
After it started loading the desktop, I hoped my tskbar wouldn't disapear, and it didn't! I was so happy. But then, after I thought everything was loading fine. BOOM! My computer exploded. I mean, it restarted. (hehe)
Without hasitence, I loaded up in safe mode with networking (look up on google what I find) and I opened my msconfig ( http://www2.whidbey.net/djdenham/Msconfig.htm ). I saw a program called Explorer, running on start up, from System32. Hum, I didn't know explorer ran on start up. I didn't think I saw it before. I looked it up in google.
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&q=system32%2Fexplorer.exe
I clicked on the slow loading "Tech Support Guy Forums - Desktop not loading" and "Aplore Virus Removal" Which is odd, cause I don't use that IM program.
Now I stoped the program explorer from starting up on start up. Renamed the file to explorer-KRP.exe and will wait to recieve another IRC trojan to see if that is why it keeps comming back. If so, I will find the program that is allowing it to come through!
I run Windows 2000 Pro., IIS 5.0 HTTP&SMTP, Service Pack 3., X-Chat (IRC program) on 4 safe servers(I hope it's not this, but it could be), my FTP, MySQL, but the only things that I saw that were connected when I did a netstat in my command prompt when I got lag problems, and saw some odd things:
computername:microsoft-ds <- What is that?
So right now, I think my problem is the fake explorer, but does anyone else have any comments? That's all I have right now.
