Hi,

Looking at buying a new laptop but the package comes with Vista. I would ideally like to rebuild it with XP (for performance and I prefer it!) but I was wondering if the XP installation disc I have will be valid if I enter the product code from the new Vista laptop.

Any help appreciated.

Microsoft will not allow you to put an earlier version of Windows on the computer. The only way that you could do this is to format the disk drive and start from scratch. The code you have with the XP disk will be accepted when you instal it.

Most makers of PC's and Laptops will put XP on if you ask them before you buy>

When you buy from Dell, most of their laptop models come with the option of configuring it with XP or Vista on it.

Also, if you already have Vista on the computer, as I've been told, legally that Vista license will cover an XP installation. However, the Vista product key will not work for XP and Microsoft will not give you an XP key even if you have Vista.

If you want to, dual-boot the two operating systems. It's really very easy to do and you don't want to waste a Vista license
