I am getting a new computer soon, and this is the one I pieced together for my liking. The objects already bought, are really not to be discused because I spent the money, and I know how ****ty the video card is, but I bought it with a gift certificate, and it was a big improvment over an 8MB nameless brand that was made in 1995 or something.

Please be kind, and direct all replies into this forum, please do not use the comment pannel for more then just comments:
Aproved Comments:
Great!
Nice!
I like the Case!
I wish I had money!
Good choice of font!
Disaproved Comments:
Bad!
I hate it!
What were you smoking when you bought that video card, I mean common its and MX for christ's sake!
I dislike your font choice.

I pretty much don't have any money right now. About $200 bucks held for the computer directly, and I still don't have a part time job.

All prices are in Canadian, but the totals for other contries are totaled underneth.

I will also last add, I am trying not to go crazy with costs so I am not buying the best of the best, and I'm not totaly cheap, so that is why I am getting an expensive case.

Some items that I want to get and don't need new of, aren't listed because they are stuff I can get later if needed or if I have any extra money to spare. Like a new Hard Drive, this one works, is fast, and is big enough. I also want to get some other stuff, but I don't need it to get the computer running at the prefformance I need. The Importants level on the right side also helps with this.

Looks a good system. Have you considered a combo CDRW/DVD instead of the two drives? might be cheaper. You list no hard disks. Is Raid necessary? a board without might be a fair bit cheaper.

I'll look into that about losing the RAID, I don't know what it is, but it's always cool to name off things that make it seems better. Expecally when I am at home on Saturday Nights bragging to my imaginary friend.

The CD-RW and DvD combo came though my head, but Both of them get faster and better, so if I mix them, I will just have ot pay more in the long run to get better ones. But I might think about it, if I save alot more money then $20-$40.

justame: this place looks to be selling me prebuild computers. I thought about it along time ago, and I really feel it is alot better for me, and many of my friends to buy the parts by hand and put it together myself. I like the hands on feeling of having a chip that can calculate math faster then I can.

Raid = Redundant Array of Inexpensive Disks

There are two main tipes of raid; raid 0, this allows two identicle disks to work together to achieve much faster read/write times otherwise known as striping. And Raid 1; this is where one disk backs the other up constantly otherwise known as mirroring. You can also use 0+1 which does both but needs 4 disks.

Thank you mouse. I guess I don't really need that, and if I can find a cheaper mobo with the stuff I want, and the stuff I don't want, I will forget about getting this one, but until I find that other board.

I find it a bit expensive. I've seen cheaper prebuild better/similar configurations

Borgtex, well you have to realize prices go up and down, and it really depends on where you are in the world to get it. If I lived next to a computer store that was always cheap, I would buy it cheap, but if I live next to an expensive place, it might be the only way I can buy it without ordering from the company itself and paying extra for shipping.

It all have variables that are hard to find and calculate. In real life, if I could make it my job to get this computer for CHEAP or FREE, I could. I would go and do it.

I could find a friend in a person that works with Asus and get my video card and mobo cheap, possibly free if I do him favours.

See, stuff like connections really help, and I wish I had some connections. I just need to find a bunch of places that I have friends working, and then get them to drop the price by $20-30 bucks! That would be great, if I could. Maybe if I get a job at some places, and get the employee discount. It's not hard to get free stuff if you have ALOT of time. ;)

That is why I haven't tried to get all this computer right away!

about raid & harddisks:
for my new computer, i'm going to put a scsi harddisk (10 000 rpm) in it + a motherboard with raid option for when i add an extra harddisk to the mix. (what i'm think is : have best performance now through scsi + best future options through adding second scsi harddisk and using raid)
if you probably will only use one harddisk spend your money on a scsi HD. raid will only be necessary when you're going to use your machine as (web)server.

Yeah, possibly, but I have 2 hard drives already, and I don't think it is nessesary to buy a new hard drive costing my alot of money if it is not needed directly. My top 4 items are needed directly.

I want that case badly, and I would rather spend the money on it now to prevent buying a new case that I didn't keep. And I need a P4 ready case, with 5 fans and 3 windows, or else it doesn't seem right! Lol

I can't find anouther board in my area without Raid, so I will leave it. But I need to check the differences between types of dvd roms. And I don't want to save $5 if I lack in quality!

Help! Which one is the best brand?!

Dvd:

AOpen 16X
LG 16X
LiteOn 16X
Pioneer 16X
Sony 16X
Toshiba 16X

Put it this way; my fairly cheap 2mb cache Maxtor has a throughput 3/4 that of a 15krpm scsi drive with 8mb cache and only marginally less than a 10krpm scsi 8mb cache disk. My disks in Raid 0 beat both into the ground and for alot less money than a scsi setup. Scsi just isn't worth it at all imo.

So what are you trying to say? I am not getting a new hard drive at this time.

I just wondered... you're buying pieces for a computer, but as you still can't build it, basically you have components getting dust and becoming obsolete (prices change, and new hardware appears often). Why don't just save the money and when you have enough, buy a functional computer (or all the components at once)?

:)

I have a computer now. Everything I have boughten is in use at the moment.

If I buy anything else, I will put it to use. But the only thing I need to get last in my 4 main parts. When I have them I can start using the new computer! the new 2.4!

If you look those parts are the ones marked "HIGH".

Don't feel bad, I got an A-Bit Gf4 mx 440 too... And it works good. I have no complaints. I didn't see the need to spend the extra $$$ for a Ti. I don't have a whole lot of time to play games (LAN parties excluded) and it holds its own in CS and Ut2k3.

And it was much better than my POS Ati Radeon.

oracleguy, you took the exact words I would of said, right out of my face hole.
