PHP and WMI

I'm going to need something like COM in the middle to get PHP and WMI to communicate, aren't I?

Sorry for this dummy question beetle ( like always!), but I looked for WMI and the best definition I got is this: Windows Management Interface/Instrumentation. Which one is correct and since you always have some cool links, it's not bad if you share some of them about this one too! Thank you.
