View Full Version : XP runs too slowly
I have had to repair (Repair option in the XP Professional CD) my XP OS. Since then, all the applications run awfully slow. I had performed a virus check (none found), a registers' cleaning, a spy removing (some found and removed, nothing important), a de-fragmentation also. Free space is enough... (about 2 GB on the OS logical partition)...
Still my applications run very slow now, all of them.
Any ideas?

Sounds like you might need to install your motherboard chip set drivers.

Agreed. They probably got wiped out during the repair.
Thanks for the answers... It looks like the automatic updater (wuauclt.exe) of the XP keeps 99% of my CPU busy, which is weird, as it did not happen before... hm... The problem is that I can not stop the process from the services manager... weird again...

oops, it worked... not from the services manager, but from the task manager... I have to dig to find how to do that from services as well.
But, anyway, I suspect it could be a virus as I don't think the updater should block the CPU up to 96-98% of it's usage power...
A good friend of mine who works for Microsoft (I was not able to contact him till today) told me also that the Repair XP Tool is a weak tool anyway. He is right, I had to reinstall the main drivers also (motherboard, sound card, video cards...:-)
But that should keep my system alive only for a couple of weeks when I intend to change my HDD and reinstall a fresh OS. Thanks everybody, problem solved.

I wonder if you have tried using Tune up before?. Tune Up My Computer designed to improve overall performance of any too slow PC. Loading and running Windows XP, word processor, spreadsheet, graphics editor, web browser, etc. will be smoother and faster than before. You will be surprised to see faster response of your PC.
