help on XHTML!!!

i've designed the page using Fireworks CS3 and exported the same to Dreamweaver CS3. I tried to link it to a simple HTML file, but it didn't work. i changed the DTD and it worked. but now i have to link to a .pdf file. but it is not taking in internet explorer but working in other browsers.
can any one help?
