Is there some sort of 30 second mp3 preview law?
How legit is it to have 20-30 second previews? Do you still have to pay royalties? Or, is there like a reduced royalty fee for 30 second clips?

As the webmaster for my college radio station, I have always been told that beyond 30 seconds of play violates copyright law. I have also been told that is it fine as long as its under 30 seconds of the entire song, and I think that applies to not only educational institutions (such as my case). I don't believe there is a science to it exactly, but if you are doing something commercial with the audio then you probably have royalties somewhere, but I don't think previews would count. If you are doing something small, it might be alright, but if you do something big, talk to a lawyer.
