I switched out my CDRW and DVD player for a combo drive today. Windows XP decided it needed re-activating. As if a CD drive is a major change to the system

It's given me a whopping 3 days to activate too rather than the previous 30. This leads me to think you've a total of 30 days to re-activate your XP within. Dunno what might happen after that... maybe it'll just crash

On the bright side I took it as an opportunity to stick in a new 2.4GHz cpu :D

did you reactivate?
if you cannot boot from CD rom create a boot disk with the required drivers on it.

Yeah, I've got cable these days so reactivating wasn't a problem. Last year I ad no connection at all and the telephone service managed to cut me off on the last few numbers every time

If I have to do this everytime I add or remove minor hardware I'll be pretty annoyed. I don't see the point of activation anyway since they claim it's not registration...

hmm

I have not heard of this upto now.
Is what you are saying, is that if you upgrade your computer or whatever and have xp you have to go online and reactivate your computer ??

just wandering ??

yeh, its to stop people installing XP on several computers, so if it has the same reg number, and fdifferent hardware, it needs to be activated, and hence will verify your license... well that's the plan...!

I think you only get a certain number of activations too which sucks majorly!

mouse a tip for you

when you download the upgrades download the file and burn it to CD then next time you reformat you will have most of your patchs/upgrades to hand.
