Our local chapter of National Audubon has a database of bird sightings which we would like to post on the web. Unfortunately, we do not have the expertise (nor money) to create an on-line database.
If anyone would be interested in doing a bit of pro bono work for a non-profit and get your program out there for the world to see and admire, please contact me (webmaster@washingtoncrossingaudubon.org).
Thanks.
Hi tcosmas
If the data is not too complicated, can you not just use a perl script along with a flat file (text tab-del file)?
I am not very sure about scripting for databases but use a flat file for a database that contains over 3000 records, each having 5 fields. It works absolutely fine and is NOT slow as I thought it may be.
I'll check out where I got the script from - it's easy to set up (which helps).
I don't know much about birds, but I guess the user it will be searching for a particular bird (e.g. robin) and then up pops the data! You can even search (using the script I use) on the second field.
Let me know what you think and then I'll dig out the reference for you.

There is someone who had volunteered to do a perl (CGI) program; but I haven't seen any results. I set up a site for her to upload the scripts to; but she hasn't done so.:(
My concept is for someone to search by bird or location seen and then have a sortable table (by date or location).
Any assistance is appreciated!!
