I want to digitize my record collection.
So far, I know I need a record deck but I don;t know: -
1. What I should connect it to my desktop with
2. What good software I should use.
Would someone point me in a sensible direction please.

I tried to do this once, and it was not as simple as I had hoped. A simple answer is to hook the audio cable (probably will use a cable with one end RCA Red/White plugs and the other end a 1/8 inch plug) into the Line-In of your computer. Then using Audacity (http://audacity.sourceforge.net/) you can record anything coming in (make sure to get the LAME MP3 encoder too). The only issue I had was that it was so soft I had to blast my speakers to hear it at a whisper. This is because of the signal strength, so we need to boost the signal somehow. So you can use a stereo system to preamp the signal.

Thank you. I shall read that tomorrow and try to get it done.

At school today I looked at the turntable in the media lab, and it was connected with a phono preamp like these:
