I've almost come to the conclusion that its better to make all your images yourself to avoid any royalty and copyright and linking back issues. What do you think?

That's one of the best things said on this forum ;)

I do always design and make all my graphics myself. That way I don't get in troubles with the lawyer's long arm.

Also, I think it's a great part of the design process to do the things yourself. I have often found myself searching for motives and exiting angles with my camera out in the real world. That way I can get just what I want, and you can do some pretty cool stuff with the pictures in Photoshop - makes em' perfect for webgraphic.

I am also more proud of my work when I can go on and say: "Hey see, I've made all this myself!"

So for me it's a very exiting part of the process to search and experiment with images and graphic that I've made myself!

I know this is more applicable to a professional workflow, but if I'm working on something I simply take one of three routes:

1.) Create the images entirely myself, which is often the case unless a photo is needed
2.) Use/Purchase royalty-free stock images, brushes, and vectors from places like Veer or iStockPhoto
3.) Draw from my own (way too large) photography collection for something I've taken

It's very tempting to do a google image search or browse Flickr for stuff to use in your design, but since the usage rights are somewhat hit and miss I definitely prefer to go one of these rights and now have to worry about it after the fact (especially b/c it is very damaging to your professionalism as a designer if it turns out you used an image without permission in a large scale project).

Cheers coders, I'm glad that I'm not the only one stressing and worrying about these things. Actually the same thing could be said about music and I'm trying to learn a lot about making my own music which I guess will be cool for flash button sounds and stuff but I do think music is less of a copyright issue because of the free sites out there that people contribute to.
