View Full Version : Floating Problem, no min-width with IE

I have a site with a fairly basic design. The center div has a left and right float div within it. These act as left and right menu columns. In the middle is the content. I set the min-width of the center div to certain width, and in most cases it keeps the divs from stacking vertically. That is, it works in Firefox, Netscape, Opera, and Safari. It just doesn't seem to be working in IE.

The main page of my site is this (http://www.knowidea.org/). If you shrink the width of the page in IE, eventually the middle content disappears. I've created a simplified version of this page with the same problem here (http://www.knowidea.org/maintest.php).

I can't seem to figure out a way to keep this problem from occurring in IE. Using absolute positioning to position the left and right columns doesn't change the issue.

It's driving me crazy and I would really appreciate any help that could be offered. Here is some of the relevant css code:

top: 139px;
left: 2%;
right: 2%;
background-color: #ffffff;
border: solid 1px;
min-width: 1038px;

float: left;
padding: 0px 3px 0px 5px;
background-color: #FFFFCC;
border-right: 1px solid #000000;
border-bottom: 1px solid #000000;
font: small Verdana,sans-serif;
padding: 0px 0px 8px 0px;

float: right;
width: 160px;
padding: 0px 0px 0px 0px;
background-color: #FFFFCC;
border-left: 1px solid #000000;
border-bottom: 1px solid #000000;
font: small Verdana,sans-serif;

padding: 0px 0px 0px 0px;
margin:0px 178px 10px 178px;
min-height: 350px;
position: relative;

you can see the literal placement of the divs in the site's source code, but here's a little summary:

<div id="pagecell">

<div id="pageName">
Test page

<div id="pageNav">

<div id="pageUpdates">

<div id="content">
Welcome to KnowIdea!

</div> //end content

<div id="siteInfo">

</div> // end pagecell

The min-wdth won't work in IE (http://www.w3schools.com/htmldom/dom_obj_style.asp#layout). You may have to find some other ways(standard layouts) to fix the issue.
