What on Earth am I doing wrong with this .htaccess file?
This is exactly what is in the file that is simply called ".htaccess":
Redirect /flightnovel.pdf http://svu.doriennesmith.com/flight/flightnovel1.pdf
The file has been placed in the directory: http://svu.doriennesmith.com/flight/, but the original file does not redirect to the new file. What could I be doing wrong?

Have you tried:
Redirect /flightnovel.pdf /flightnovel1.pdf
And does your Hosting service allow for .htaccess?

Tried it, but still having problems, and my hosting package allows for it...

Redirect flightnovel.pdf http://svu.doriennesmith.com/flight/flightnovel1.pdf
Redirect http://yourwebsite.com/flightnovel.pdf http://svu.doriennesmith.com/flight/flightnovel1.pdf

It still does not redirect. Here is the last one I tried:
Redirect http://svu.doriennesmith.com/flight/flightnovel.pdf http://svu.doriennesmith.com/flight/flightnovel1.pdf

No need for that last one, if it was working you would get a Firefox is not redirecting properly message. I would contact your host and be sure you are allowed to use htaccess. Also for an htaccess to work it needs to go into your public_html folder or your web documents folder which ever that may be.
