CSS Layout

Hi,
I need to build a frame for my website, but I can't manage to do it "tableless".
Here is what I want to do.

My website needs to be 100% width. The header is 100% width.
Then I have 3 columns. the middle one is exactly 780px (no more no less) and each column on the side vary in width depending on the viewers browser.


Is it possible to do that in tableless???

There aren't great ways to achieve such a layout in CSS unfortunately, but I'd argue why are you trying to do this in the first place? Fixing a center column of 780px and then flanking it with two columns and chrome is a pretty big viewport for most website designs.

If legibility is a concern (not wanting content line-widths getting out of hand) I'd suggest just imposing a max width. When you start mixing floated elements and firm widths you can run into some problems, especially if you're setting overly large ones.

Could you show us a graphical mock up of your layout? I almost suspect you aren’t actually longing for three columns but one centered column with a left and right border? I could suspect wrong, though.

Yes, VIPStephan, you are correct.
In fact, it's one big column, the left and right border are only "margin" but I want to be able to add some ads in it....
