View Full Version : The page is functional and it works, but....it's dull.

My menu of useful sites works OK but it does not inspire me. As I am artistically a moron, it must be dull.
I would like to alter it, so I would like some advice on presentation.
Has anyone a url that I can visit to help me?:D

This probably should have gone in the website review forum, not here.
Anyways, your colors seem to clash with each other. Maroon, red, and blue. I don't really like that color scheme. I noticed you use no images. I think one or two images might spice things up a bit (I'm not taking into account the validation images).

You are right, it is dull. However, you can make this a positive thing. I have spent a lot of time working on improving my graphic design skills. I suggest looking at some sites that look really nice and using some elements from them. I would also read some blogs that talk about design.
The first thing I would do is draw a layout using Photoshop or Illustrator. Both of these are quite expensive, but you can use The Gimp, or Inkscape (both are free). Draw what you would like your page to look like, then cut the pictures up an make it a web page.
Here is a place where you can get some free images for buttons or layout elements. BittBox (http://www.bittbox.com/)
They also have tutorials for Photoshop and Illustrator.

I use Adobe kuler (http://kuler.adobe.com/) to help when when designing web pages, it's useful because there are a lot of different colour schemes other people have made that are good, or you can just create your own.

I like how all the links are contained by the blue boxes. Looks good with the rounded corners too.
However I think it looks a little strange with the same picture (your office) twice. Other than that, nice.
