View Full Version : Despair with Vista.

I am in despair with Vista. I upgraded from XP Pro when Vista came out. I went for Vista Business. After several months of continual frustrationI went back to XP, in the process losing some of my emails and other application data. I continually could not copy files across.

Thinking that perhaps I had installed Vista badly, I foolishly decided to try afresh and bought a copy of Vista Home premium and installed it on a reformatted disk drive.

It is still the same. I have tried it with AUC off. I have given everyone full permissions, but I still am not allowed to copy my C drive to my D drive.
Before I give up and re-install XP I thought that I would at least seek help, hence this post. If anyone can help me through this STUPID farce, I will be grateful. So far I think Vista is a disaster, and so slow.

Frank

I think that I have been here before on this topic, but I can't find it hence this post.

You can't copy your C drive from your D drive if the content on the C drive was made with XP. This is because your content was locked. You need to change the security on the documents you want to copy over.

Do this search in google

changing security on private folders windows xp

Should be the second or third result that comes up. Thats what you need to do.

Thank you but.

(C drive has Vista and D drive had XP programs, NOT the OS)

I have already applied the maximum permissions to both drives.
It will not even let me make a new folder.
In fact, if anything, the Home premium version is worse in this respect than the Business edition. It really is frustrating. I have spent hours trying to resolve this.

Seemingly, it accepts what I do, permission wise, but still will not allow me to copy C to D.
It will let me copy D to C. Both have NTFS.

What are you trying to copy from the C drive to the D drive? Are you just trying to change the location of where data files get saved?

Basically I want to back up some files from C to D.
I have also found that the Program Files folder is differently (greater?)protected than the others.
Do you know about this?

Wow, that sounds messed up.

Is it an internal Hard Drive?
If so, make sure that Vista didn't install the boot files in drive D.
I think you can run 'dir /ah D:\' or something like that on command prompt to check for hidden files on Drive D.

If the boot files are installed there, then that's probably why you can't copy.
Here is how to solve that specific problem:

Drive D is a USB drive and Windows will not install into a usb drive. Anyway, there is no trouble running Vista. It is only the copying.permissions that are the trouble. Drive C: Has Vista on it.

It will boot with the usb drive removed.

'dir /ah C:\' shows that the boot files are on drive C:\

Try downloading Unlocker (http://ccollomb.free.fr/unlocker/), though if you want to copy C:, there are a lot of conflicts, including unlocker itself.

Thanks. I'll try it later. It is a good program to have. I didn.t know it existed.

I'll post the results later.

Now, off to breakfast.
