Has anyone else bought or had any experience with the HP pavilion dv6500 laptop yet? This may be a little bit of a rant but I thought it may be useful to post my frustrations from today. If your thinking of getting this laptop to downgrade to XP, just don't. After hours of fighting to find drivers for it, I've completely given up and HP tech support tells me that its impossible that I got as far as I did(getting XP installed) so they're obviously no help. Furthermore, so far this system will not boot a linux cd either, fedora 6 or the latest ubuntu. Downloading the latest fedora to try it now. If anyone has had any better luck than me with this laptop please let me know, but as it stands right now, I don't believe any chipset/graphics/audio etc.. drivers work for it with XP, even drivers taken straight from manufacturers. So far I've wasted 6 hours on this today, and I'm preparing to put vista back on it in the end.

I'm not surprised you didn't find many drivers for it. Most of the hardware was designed for Vista. You might be able to use the Vista drivers provided by HP on your windows xp install. I'm confused though. Why didn't you just buy the laptop with XP on it in the first place? Most retail stores allow you to request this option.

Also why would you stick with XP? IMO Vista is so much more better.

I have the hp dv6236 BTW.

I ordered the computer from HP online, and the only ones left that they will pre install XP on is the compaq presarios. My fiance just bought the dv2000 and I was able to put XP on it with no problems hardly at all, mine just wasn't so lucky. I already tried the vista drivers also, had to give up and put vista business on it. No denying the inevitable i guess lol. I just don't like being forced into an OS that I wasn't ready to switch to yet. Guess this makes me the test dummy for when the vista switch comes at work. Have you had any compatibility problems with any applications as of yet on yours?

I to have Vista Business. The only problem I've had was with the drivers for my Microsoft Intellimouse. Its the 1.0 version. Its application isn't supported by Vista. I've tried installing the 2.0 version software but it doesn't recognize my mouse.

My mouse seems to work, but I haven't tried the software for it yet, so none of the extra features are there. As long as Tomcat4, mysql, and netbeans work well then I shouldn't have too many problems.

I think my problems came down to being with the AMD chipset. In yours, you have the intel version which I believe is the dv6500t, where mine(the AMD version) is the dv6500z. I could have that switched. That seems to me my mistake, as the intel chipsets are able to be downgraded to XP, I've not yet seen a successful downgrade of the AMD version of this laptop though.

Has anyone been successful in downgrading the AMD version of the DV6500 laptop?

Hello,

I am going through just the same misery. I managed to downgrade my HP Pavilion dv6500t from Vista to XP (the tech support was not so much help I had to find the correct SATA controller myself and use a usb floopy to be able to boot it-if anybody interested and has the same disk ST9160821AS needs the 82801HEM/HBM SATA AHCI COntroller:
http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=N&ProductID=2032&DwnldID=13315&strOSs=44&OSFullName=Windows*%20XP%20Professional&lang=eng

), but I am not able to find the driver for my graphic card.
The tech specifications are the following:

Intel core 2 duo 2.4 GHz
383MB NVIDIA GeForce 8400m GS.
160 GB 5400 RPM SATA

Could you please help me out with the driver? I didn't find it on the nvidia website.

And another interesting question I need a hint- any suggestions which driver I might look for to be able to put my XP to standby mode? (It's not active not only for the case of closing the lid, but I simply don't have it as an active option when turning off the computer!!!).

Thanks a lot!!!

I just got HP PAVILION DV6500

INTEL CORE DUE 2 2 GHZ
2 GB RAM
NVIDIA 256 MB
160 GB HDD

After many hours and learning about slipstreaming an XP installation disk - I did it - they make it extremely difficult - I even had to find a hacked driver for the video card - got it all working and will try to post how to do this and save others endless hours of torture to get what they want.

Well I have everything working now expept the monitor will not power on after coming out of standby - anyone know about this???

For anyone that gets interested in downgrading on a new laptop from HP, check this site out. After 4-5 months of Vista, I was finally able to successfully downgrade to Windows XP!

I brought a new HP dv6500t Intel based laptop.

I am fed up with Vista and I tried downgrading to XP.

I tried to boot the system with XP professional boot CD. Unfortunately, the boot CD does not recogonize my hard disk.

Intel Core 2 Duo 2 Ghz, 2 GB RAM, NVidia 128 MB 8400MS, 120 GB WD HDD.

Any assistance woule be appreciated.

Thanks

There should be an option in your BIOS to disable native sata. This will let the CD recognize the hard drive. I had to do this on an hp dv2500 that my fiance bought. I can't remember if I had to do this with mine, but I probably did.

Hi brad211987,

As you had suggested, I tried to disable the native SATA via the BIOS. Unfortunately, I find no options in my BIOS to do that. Even I tried to search for options to disable SATA in HDD auto detection section. But I do not have this section.

My BIOS version is Phoenix BIOS F.33 Rev A. Kindly advice.

Thanks and Regards

From this forum post: http://forums.cnet.com/5208-12546_102-0.html?forumID=133&threadID=243153&messageID=2460401

You must feed the SATA driver to the XP installation program.

HP Pavilion dv6000t "Software & Driver downloads"
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareCategory?product=3224055&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&submit.y=0&submit.x=0&lang=en&cc=us

Click on "Microsoft Windows XP."
Scroll down to and click on "Intel SATA AHCI Controller Driver"
Follow the "Installation Instructions."

I've never had to do this, but I know that people have had success adding the sata drivers to the installation.
