View Full Version : more popular server, m$, apache or other?
Hi,
I seem to have developed the notion from reading somewhere, that linux is the more popular server software. However, tonight on the news, it was said that m$ servers are the most used.
Can anyone shed light on the correct situation please.

It wouldn't surprise me. Here's an article from CNet:

I am currently taking a unix based class, my prof. told us the other day that unix/linux servers power more internet servers and corporate networks than MS NT & 2000 combined.
something regarding the ease of maintance after the initial setup of the unix/linux box.

That's probably true. The graph doesn't show OS's, only web server software. And it can't take into account the sites that hide their ServerSignature(or whatever IIS calls it).
I didn't read the whole article that Aradon posted, but from the first paragraph:Computer makers sold $17.7 billion worth of Windows servers worldwide in 2005 compared with $17.5 billion in Unix servers, IDC analyst Matthew Eastwood said of the firm's latest Server Tracker market share report. "It's the first time Unix was not top overall since before the Tracker started in 1996."
That's all well and good, but it doesn't mean that people use Windows more than Unix.. just that they bought less servers. Maybe their existing servers didn't need replacing? ;p
I don't know, maybe I'm biased but I see far more Linux servers that Windows.

well... that doesnt mean much... unix is cheap. Windows is expensive. Personally, when i get a new server, I use an install CD I already have, so the computer comes with no OS.

Google don't buy servers, they build their own ... and they do NOT run windows ;) and they are about the 4th or 5th in the data center league (# of physical machines)
In my experience many more linux systems will be custom built, especially for small to medium sized hosts/SMB's and are unlikely to show up in anyones sales figures.
thats for web-servers, in the SMB/Corporate office Windows is still dominant (and always has been)
