View Full Version : Protecting music files through folder permissions?

Firstly, I know that it's a bit of a fools errand to try and make it impossible to download a file... Where there's a will, there's a way as a general rule... a bit like trying to protect your source code. What I do want to do though, is make it a bit more difficult so as to deter most people...

WHat I am wondering, is whether it is possible to have, for example, an embedded player on a web page that accesses the music files from a specific folder (so far so good), but set permissions for that folder in such a way that the folder can be accessed by scripts on the host, but not by users who try to access the folder from the outside world?

If possible, it might not stop stream capturing and the likes, nor would it stop someone playing it through a tape recorder (the old way's are often the simplest. lol), but would stop direct download.

Is this possible? Maybe an obvious question to most, but to me, well, I genuinely don't know... what would be the permissions if it is possible?

You could start here ... using .htaccess
