Back in the summer, my computer's hard drive failed and had to be replaced. Now, I want to use the DVD-ROM drive, but can't find the DVD program. Maybe the program or driver was not installed; I don't know. Does anyone have suggestions for this? Is there a site I can go to for a driver for the drive, or something? Here's the specs of the dvd drive, from right-clicking My Computer and choosing Properties.

Do you mean watch a DVD movie? A DVD-ROM drive is a DVD-ROM drive, Windows or any OS shouldn't have any problems recognizing it or using it.

If you want to watch a movie though, the best software I've used is WinDVD, though PowerDVD is nice too. I believe Windows Media Player (the latest version) can play DVD's as well.

However, WinDVD and PowerDVD aren't free... if you're using *nix then take a look at Xine or Ogle, both are free, and both are excellent.

Yes, I mean for watching DVD movies. You mentioned the latest version of Windows Media Player can play DVD's- I'll update it now. How can you play a dvd? Just insert it , and click play dvd (or something like) in WMP?

I honestly don't know. I avoid Windows Media Player at all costs... I just remember reading about it.

Try searching microsoft.com for info on it.

Your Compaq should have came with DVD Player software. Try looking for it on your restore CD. You also might be able to re-download it off Compaq's website.
