On Windows Task Manager, I can see that a process called "System" (NOT "System Idle Process") is using up 100% of the CPU. Well, actually, it says 50%, but I have dual processors. So what could be causing this, and what do I do about it?

Can you tell me:
- What programs other than "system" are in the top for CPU and memory use? What happens if you kill those processes?
- What programs were top in CPU right before "system" pegged the CPU?
Are those programs still responsive if you try using them?
- Disconnect the computer from the internet. Still pegged CPU?
- Disable firewall, antivirus, autodefragmenters, and other passive programs one at a time. Still pegged CPU?
If you don't get an answer from doing that, try out the tools from
SysInternals (http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/default.mspx). Those can often tell you a lot you never wanted to really know about your system.
