Hello, I have this old laptop with a ATI igp-320m north bridge
I would like to upgrade the processor and some other things on this thing but I can't seem to find what processors are compatible with this. I currently have a AMD athlon xp 2000+ chip.
I also have 384MB of pc2100 ddr ram in this thing that I would consider upgrading if I knew what ram speeds were compatible as well.
I thought I could get this information pretty easily with a google search, but I didn't have much luck.
Thanks for any help!

The reason you are having trouble is that you typically can't upgrade laptops like that.
The processors in laptops usually aren't directly interchangeable with their desktop versions.
The memory however should be upgradeable. Laptops use SO-DIMM memory, before you buy more memory you'll want to see if it has any sockets free or what sizes are using up the slots. Typically there is a removable panel on the bottom that lets you get to the memory but it depends on the laptop. You'll also want to look at the manual for the laptop to see what the maximum memory supported is.
If it has PC2100 DDR now, that is what you'll want to stick with. Chances are faster memory would still just run at PC2100.

oracleguy- thanks for your quick reply.
Well, the only way I could see this being difficult, is if the bios or motherboard would not be able to handle a different processor without re-flashing or some sort of factory modification. I know this probably uses a mobile version of the processor, although maybe not easily available on most retail sites, I have found processors of the same series, model and socket for laptops on more obscure internet stores either new or pulled from laptops. I do have the service manual for the laptop, and I have disassembled it, so physically changing the processor would not be much of an issue (unless the thermal paste is a permanent glue type).
I simply am trying to see what processors could work if obtained and installed properly. I suppose it might not be as easy as simply swapping the processor to get it to work, jumpers or bios settings might require manual configuring, but I would be happy to do this if it required it and I knew or could calculate the proper values. I am willing to do anything short of replacing the motherboard or purchasing expensive equipment/tools.
Anyways, any more information is appreciated.
Thanks again!
