ok dumb question time. How do I set it so that the prompt for username/password combination pops up? I am used to having a page with a form asking for the username and password and having users login to a restricted area that way.
I thought it was done with the .htaccess and .htpasswd files but that doesnt seem to be working.

.htaccess is an Apache thing not an IIS thing.
Which one are you using?
If you are using IIS you need to setup security on the folder in order to do what you want.

this is on a web that was migrated from a unix server to a Win2K IIS one
I thought this was an apache only item, but I have seen sites running on Win2K IIS that have the prompt. I assume this is done via permissions set in win2k?

Yeah it is. It is based of the directory security permissions in IIS and off of the security setup on the actual folder and files. (Like when you go to the properties of either on the 'Security' tab).
So you can setup a sub-folder on your website and restrict it to certain users or groups on the domain.
