I got a laptop today and i am trying to netowrk it with my desktop...

My desktop is a win98 machine
My laptop is a winXP machine

im going through a 4 port router which i conected to the internet... I have the internet on bot computers and it works fine... I have never networked 2 computers together befor so i really dont know all the terminology but ill try to explain my problem...

I set up XP machine for the network... It has a neat little network setup wizard which did everything for me... then i went to my 98 machine a searched under FIND COMPUTERS for my XP Machine...

Windows 98 see's my XP machine...

But when i goto my XP machine and try to search for the 98 Machine it does not see it... I dont think i have my 98 machine configured right...

Can someone walk me throught the steps of setting up 98 for my network... Neither machine is running a server i dont think.

First make sure that your XP machine is on a workgroup and not a domain... Second, make sure that the workgroup on both are the same... And finally, turn off Browsemaster on the 98 Machine...

For the first, (on the XP box) right-click on My Computer, Select properties, select the Network Properties tab... Select Properties... You should have selected, Member of workgroup... The name in the workgroup box should be the same as the one on your 98 box...

For the second refer to the first...

For the third, (on the 98 box) right-click on Network Neighborhood, Select properties, on the first tab scroll through the list and find the File and Print Sharing device... Double-click it... Choose browsemaster and make sure it is disabled... If you cannot find File and Print sharing, you have to install/enable it...

I've done this actually, I have two 98 machines and one XP. I do it with Internet Connection Sharing and a 4 port hub rather than a router so I'm not sure if it'd be the same procedure. You might try dialing a direct connection from the XP machine to the 98 one since you're only dealing with two machines.

As long as it is a workgroup, you shouldn't need a server name...

On the windows 98 box, for file and print sharing properties you should have LM Announce and Browsemaster... LM Announce you can leave alone, Browsemaster should be disabled...
