I have a Linksys WRT54G wireless router. There are 5 laptops connected to the router. However, one user experiences frequent disconnection from the wireless network. What could be the problem? Or is there any way of setting the router for optimized performance? Such as changing channels? Please advice, thanks!

Are there any other wireless devices in the area? What is the user using to connect to the router? Is it a built in wireless adapter or an external one. Do they use a cell phone or a blue tooth device while using the computer?

I don't have a linksys but you may be able to boost the transmit signal strenth. Also cordless phones near the users system could also cause some interference.

It might have something to do with the range of the Wireless signal coming from the router...or the range of the builtin wireless network card itself.

Have that person move closer to the router if they can and see if the connection drops.

What channel is the WLAN broadcasting on? Can you connect to a different access point with the affected thinkpad, and see whether it does the same thing again?

Make sure you check out the things which have already been mentioned.

Check to make sure the laptop does not have any "power save" settings that are turning off the adapter.

there's no cordless phones or bluetooth devices near the router. the user doesn't experience any disconnections when connected to a different access point. previously the user's connection in the office is fine until i set wpa. then the problem started. i have removed wpa since but the problem persists.

the wireless settings are as below:
wireless network mode: mixed
channel: 11 - 2.462GHz
SSID broadcast: enabled
security: disabled
Authentication Type: Auto (Default: Auto)
Basic Rate: Default (Default: Default)
Transmission Rate: Auto(Default: Auto)
CTS Protection Mode: Disable (Default: Disable)
Frame Burst: Disable (Default: Disable)
Beacon Interval: 100 (Default: 100,Milliseconds, Range: 1 - 65535)
DTIM Interval: 1 (Default: 1, Range: 1 - 255)
ragmentation Threshold:2346 (Default:2346, Range: 256 - 2346)
RTS Threshold: 2347 (Default:2347, Range: 0 - 2347)
AP Isolation: off (Default: Off)
Secure Easy Setup: Enable (Default: Enable)

added: at moment, the thinkpad r52 is on cable. but when it goes wireless, another laptop gets affected and both disconnects frequently. when r52 is on cable, the other one has no problem. this is baffling

Sounds like the wireless cards are interfering with each other. Have you tried using only one system at a time to see if they are causing interference? If that happens to be the issue then one of the systems may have to get an external wireless adapter.
