View Full Version : PDO vs. direct database extensions

Apologies in advance if this is not the right place for this question...I'm looking for general advice/comments as opposed to a solution to a particular problem.
I’m interested in understanding the best way to leverage a database using PHP. I’m interested in opinions on PDO vs. direct database extensions…which do you use and why?

I use direct, they are faster ... but the speed difference is minimal & I want to start moving to PDO for portability reasons... of course portability is also the reason I cant do it yet since I still have PHP4 servers in play.
If you have PHP5 and only PHP5 servers then it would seem like the right move to me.

Thanks. That is helpful and interesting.
Given the announcement of PHP4's deprecation, I'm guessing that most people will be moving to PHP5 soon. Would you agree? How entrenched is the community in PHP4?

Depends, I am only now moving everything over to PHP5 .. but thats on servers I control, I still have clients on shared hosting with PHP4 and some managed dedicated servers where the PHP version depends on the control panel.
If I were to look for a shared or managed-dedicated host today I would not consider a PHP4 host... and I would expect that I would have been one of the last to form that opinion (slow mover me ;)) so I assume its time .. especially now PHP announced that PHP4 is no longer being developed and is limited to security updates only.
