I think this post might be better served in the 'site reviews' sub forum 'general web building'

Things that I would improve:
well it
doesn't validate (http://validator.w3.org/check?verbose=1&uri=http%3A%2F%2Ftechnolanecss.sitesled.com%2F)
You're events (onclick, etc) are written directly into the markup (you should seperate style, content, and behavior)
you have a ton of  s for some reason, rather than using css margin or padding or something.
Also using 'CENTER' and 'BR' is deprecated/unnecessary where it is used.

I'd read up on 'unobstusive JS', and 'dom scripting'.

but design wise it looks like your doing ok.

the only reason it doesnt vaildate is because of the advertising of my free hosting at the bottom, and this will be changed when the site is ready to be launched. and the other stuff i will look up thanks

I can only add one thing to zro@rtv suggestions.

Personally, I don't like the flash animation you have on the page.

I didn't even realize the animation though I agree. I think its big. Its taking away from the overall design. At most make it smaller. I still think you should be using swfobject for the flash rather than attempting to create your own javascript. If you can't get swfobject working then you should actually READ the documentation on it. That site TELLS YOU EVERYTHING you need to know on how to get it to work.

Also will you be charging for your web design services? Judging from your past posts I think you should actually have a decent portfolio BEFORE you start charging people for web design.

On first sight the site looks really nice.

On second sight there are a couple of things that can be improved:

The mirror effect in the header doesn’t make sense. In fact, it’s more counterproductive actually. I’d suggest using the ”shiny table” method (if any mirror effect at all) where you put the mirror under the headline, fading out towards the bottom
The tabs are too small for the text. They are probably static images. Better use the sliding doors (http://www.alistapart.com/articles/slidingdoors/) technique.
When hovering over the links (tabs) the sub navigation is kinda hanging there in the air with no point of reference… I mean it’s not clear what’s happening. Is this an error? Also the background color is the same as in the content section which makes it hard to distinguish.
The main links link to the index pages which is kind of useless as well. Better remove the link entirely.

i find that quite offensive considering i am quite clearly more skilled at front end development, i.e. design than ive seen on your site or portfolio, i may not be amazing at the coding side but this shouldnt stop me getting business, looks are very important to a customer. and i learn so much more every day.

thanks for the advice VIPSteven. seems you have faith lol

Don't ask for the truth if you can't handle it you know... I have to agree with Aero's comment. It's just something we see too often nowadays: people making websites with tables and invalid code, and they're charging money for it.

If you are clearly more skilled then why don't you show us some work?

I suggest you sit down, learn CSS and code some websites with CSS, not tables. It's the only way you will get better at it, not by counting on us fixing up your code all the time.

Just based on design, you might want to consider adding some line-height. Reading all that serif text creates is hard on the eyes and looks a little sloppy with all the rivers created in the flow of reading. I would even consider choosing a different font. Perhaps a sans-serif? Especially on your menu. I think it would look more consistent with your sans-serif futuristic title.

I also agree that the flash is distracting.

As far as coding, definitely put some margin on your navigation div instead of using all those non-breaking spaces. And if your buttons are going to be the same on every page, consider putting all of the button JavaScript in it's own file so all your pages can get to it easily.h

Ouch people.

Jutlander and Aero, as a web designer and a graphic design major I have to say that this guys work is much better than what I have just seen on the PR Designz portfolio. Not to be mean, but the design is more consistent and follows some nice design principles and rules. No there isn't as much, but he's not using drop shadows which is a classic sign that someone doesn't know how to use Photoshop or some other graphic design software that makes text hard to read. Sheesh, can't we all just be nice though?

And from what I can tell, this page isn't using tables.

CSSisthebest

erm yeah so where exactly are these tables that your on about ?

how is there a right way to use photoshop that like saying theres a right way to draw when there isnt each to thier own with the way in which they impliment photoshop into projects

yeah and im updating and getting rid of those   thanks tho

Well I wasn't referring to you CSS, I was talking about Aero. There are some usability issues with putting gobs of drop shadow onto text. You can't read it very well. That is what I mean. And I think it happens too often unfortunately.

Drop shadow has its place, but one must be careful. I was getting on to those people ganging up on you.

Yes it is, open the code: http://technolane.sitesled.com/ Ctrl + U in Firefox.

You may not like what you saw on the PR Designz logo, but someone else might. At least all the designs in Aero's portfolio are valid code. I'm just being realistic and laying out the cards as they are here. It's alright to have trouble with a design, even as a professional designer, but fixing it yourself will make you better and you'll most likely remember it the next time.

But if CSSisthebest agrees to do a design for a customer and runs into problems, he can come here for help. That's fair, but it shouldn't happen 20 times when he is supposed to be able to do it (i'm speaking of CSS here) for the customer.

Let's not turn it into a debate about who has the prettiest portfolio. Bear in mind that it's not always the designer who chooses how the website looks, the customer may have wished to design it themself and then have someone code it.

As for the tables. This is the code for your index page:
I see a bunch of <table> <tr> <td> etc. tags down there after all the Javascript and CSS.

Erm yeah if you actually read my portfolio you would see that I didn't actually design the sites I just coded them. Once I code them I hand them off to the client. The client most of the time fudges them up with their minimal html skills.

@lithriel for someone who only has 5 posts here you sure seem to think that you know what you are talking about but you have nothing to back it up. Show us some of your work.

He asked about a review and he got one. If he can't handle it then don't ask for it.

Have a URL? The code I posted was from: http://technolane.sitesled.com/

I wasn't the one bashing people asking for help to start with. What do I need you to look at my work for?

Oh and Jutlander, I have figured out the confusion. You were looking at a different page than what he posted. It's actually

http://technolanecss.sitesled.com

There was a missing css in there. =)

Jutlander

OK, guess I looked at the old site then.

Oh, maybe that's why everyone was so confused.

Sorry all.

the site i am referring to is http://technolanecss.sitesled.com (http://technolanecss.sitesled.com/) it is on free hosting for testing purposes only, and yes that is the old site. and i thought i dont want it in tables so did it in divs and css.

and sorry lithriel (http://www.codingforums.com/member.php?u=53519) didnt mean to get on the offensive it just seems i have to seeming this is turning into a debate.

I can only speak for myself, but the fact that the URL I was looking at was wrong, doesn't change my point of view. It is a fact that one must have fundamental knowledge of HTML and CSS in order to be able to design a site that is up to current standards. I doubt CSSisthebest has that. I could only check the CSS (the html validator was currently down) but there were a bunch of errors.

Don't take me wrong, not trying to hack anyone down, but it's not a shame to be a beginner or inexperienced or whatever you prefer to call it. I admit I am bad at PHP (at this time that is, but have just bought 2 books on it and MySQL a few hours ago actually), so I need some help with that. In return I might be able to do some CSS for them if they're not so good at that.

We all have our strengths and weaknesses. I just signed up today to get help on something. Then I started reading posts to maybe help someone else and return the favor. And then I become entangled in a big debate.

Is this forum really about helping? I seemed to remember reading a sticky post at the top of this forum about not bashing people because they are less experienced.

CSSisthebest

people need to understand this is not the finished site, i havent validated the css yet because the site is not finished, this is why i was asking for tips to improve it if i had it completely finished i wouldnt have asked. and yeah obv im not as good at css as some of the members on this forum, but without sounding up my own *** i think my design skills shine through and most of the time the client have no idea or little idea of what they want, il admit there are some clients that no every presise detail they want included in their site but this is a minority.

I am sorry for all the confusion CSSisthebest.

I shouldn't be so mean either. I thought it would be fun to become an active member of a coding forum. It's what I love to do. And I'm doing a bang-up job of making friends aren't I?

Hope you found some of our advice helpful.

Oh dear lord. Yes, you became entangled in a big debate because you chose to do so yourself. I don't control what's happening on your computer or what you write...

Yes this forum is about helping and I don't think anyone is bashing anyone here. It all depends on how you read stuff and interpret them in your mind. On a forum you don't get the same conversation as in the real world. All you see is text, no mimic or body language or pitch.

I know very well I was bold jutlander. If I had tried to run from it you would have known. Seems like you like stirring up trouble and making people mad.

Anyone can tell by your words alone. Seems we are done helping CSSthebest, perhaps we ought to stop this bashing now, or whatever YOU call it.

You are guessing now and not keeping to facts. You can have the last reply here, I don't care.

Well, if I may chime in again: When asking for help or a review or for adivce there’s a difference between criticism and constructive criticism. Sometimes some people forget to be constructive but you should still be confident enough to take that criticism because some people are honest without being diplomatic.

So, CSSisthebest, another constructive criticism from me: Be a man and stop whining. Know your strength and improve your weak parts. And don’t care about those you know that they don’t know better.

Oh and another tip: please don’t double/triple/… post. There is the edit button if you wanna add something afterwards. And if that gets stuck then click on “go advanced” and submit your post, that always works.

Okay, this thread is getting stupid. Plus, it's in the wrong section to begin with. I'll move it to Site Reviews after I close it.

I invite everyone to read the Site Reviews sticky, especially this line:

Be prepared for both compliments and criticisms. If you're not, then you're not ready for a review yet.

Having said that, as a general note to everyone: if you don't want a flame war, stop lighting fires and fanning the flames.
