difficult... it doesn't look bad at all, but i feel it can be improved, yet i have a hard time formulating it.

Where navigation often is sparse, your site teems with it. Maybe you could start with reducing the profusion of links the the same pages to one or maybe two formats, like a vertical menu bar and a horizontal type navigation bar across the top of each page (you know, like "Home > Archive > Fast browsing tips" for example).
Furthermore, i don't know if this is a laguage thing, but usually a vertical menu sits on the left side of a page, since most western languages read from left to right, and visitors will most likely start scanning the page at the menu. Being written in english, i'd suggest putting a menu (if you do want one) on the left.

i agree. i'd also get rid of either:
the fireworks
the message scroller
or
the status bar scroller

it's a little busy with all 3.
