View Full Version : Amyone want to buld a site for C Programming
12-24-2002, 12:25 PM
I have a site which is not to shabby but it was created the wrong way... Meaning that i did not use css or any other easy maintaince features simply because the site needed to be launched fast... well now the site is launched and it took off great with over 2500 hits in 4 months and 57+ members and 1200+ post on the board and growing.... not to mention that i got a listing on google....
Well the point is a need a better design and easier maintance... I know a little PHP/MySQL not much tho...
Does anyone want to tackle this project... Its a fairly small site and i will allow you to put links to your site anywhere in it if you wish to build it for or even with me... The reason i am asking for help is because i rather focus on learning C Programming than redoing my whole site
the site now is www.CBeginnersUnited.com I'm even willing to Pay-pal you a few bucks for lunch money or something :)

It does like it needs some work, but the site looks somewhat fine...
What do you want to do to it, complete re-design of the layout?
12-24-2002, 12:57 PM
well... im ok with the layout but id like to implement css... For example when i want to change an item in the horizontal menu i have to do it for all the pages... Where if i used css i would only have to edit the css.
I would like i more professional looking design... and what i lack most is content on the homepage... Iv been told that googlebot likes content and i dont have much on the first page...

Hrmm... why not use a template? Not a site template that you get from those freebie sites, like freetemplates.com or what have you, but what you get in dreamweaver, a template where if you change one thing, all the files are changed automatically?
It would be a lot easier to do, and .css will be able to change features, colours, but not the actual design. It cannot make a menu... you just use a .js file or something for that.
I would have loved to help you, but at the mo, I am building my own site, which is giving me a lot of grief... so I don't really have the time to help you. I can advise you, but that is just about it... :(

well i thank you for your help... Im going to search google for tuts on templates... do you know of any off hand?
And once i learn how to use a template then the question remains that is there ne1 willing to design a basic look for my site... The one i have is kinda boring and un professional. To be honest it looks like someone who is just learning HTML. Thats my opinion... If you have any ideas for me let me know i want a look taht will keep people comming back... i know look isnt everthing but i offer alot of good things at my site such as free lectures on how to program in C and tutorials a message board... I need a site that makes all those features jump out and bite you...

is there anything wrong with using a free template... Im not the bes graphics artist so i was thinking one of these free ones might work... although most of them look a little far out in their design... what is everyones opinion?

The free templates are usually really poorly made, and carry a lot of baggage with them...
It is therefore best that you design a site yourself, which I have done.
I wanted a corporate design, and well, the corporate stuff that you would find in these free template sites are really tacky, and are generally an eyesore.
To make your site cross-browser friendly, code in xhtml, and validate it with http://validator.w3.org to ensure minimal problems in the future.
If you want to make all the features in your site to stand out, then you will need to lose that grid effect on your site, and make it more subtle, with colours that complement each other. Try using something like www.vibrantmedia.com and have your site kept up to date. Use cgi, and make your website seem as tho it is constantly updating itself. And, try to implement features in your forum into your website, like www.pixeljunction.com have. It does make a huge difference.
Look around different sites, and you will see what makes a good site, and what would be a poor site.
You do not need to be a graphic designer at all to make a decent template, even though it does help. :)
You can do something effective, and have it work very well, despite it being somewhat plain. It can be an ingenious way of doing something, and can make your site ever more extravagent.
Hope that helps. :)

I could probably help you with the design if you'd like. I couldn't help much with php though, I'm an ASP boy myself but I am learning php.
www.guistuff.com has templates but they are more kids site type things not really professional.
I'm not the best at graphics but I'm not to bad. Here's a quick example http://188.8.131.52/projectodyssey . I know it's not much but it's the best I have online at the mo.

hey i would like it if you could help me... I like your graphic... nice vivid colors... Thats kinda how i would like my entire site to look... This way it would kinda go with the forum..
Things to keep in mind while designing templates are...
The Contest Page(comming soon and will work much like the quiz)
I can help you with some of you php needs in return and i can also link to your site from mine to give you some hits...
A nice template would be enough to get me started... Comments in the template would make it easier on me also.. And if you want i can paypal you a little cash just in good faith... Thanx for helping

hehe Paypal rules...
Anyhow, I think MHtml is sleeping now, it is around 1am for him over in Australia, the lands down under... :)

Well, I was asleep.. I'm going back to it in a min but I am awake enough to say a few things...
Firstly have you any particular style?
Secondly logo redesign?
Thridly NO Ca$h required.
You could link to me if you wanted. I have a small graphic which fades in when a user mouses over it so it doesn't distract from page viewing. This will be good for my design portfolio so I'm fine with doing it for nothing cos I got to start somewhere.

Do you have AIM mIRC or yahoo... it would be much easier for us to colaborate ideas if we could chat live.

I only have MSN. I wouldn't touch the others with a 10ft clown pole. All the spyware and security faults.
If you want I will PM you my MSN. :)

you need anthing else done
for your site since it seems you got the layout out coverd already if you do than that will be great:thumbsup:
I see you have a link to cprogramming. Are you also a mmber there? I am, but I don't post there much anymore (don't ask me why, I have no idea)
good job by the way :)

i am a member of their dorums but i dont post their much... I am also a newb a C and the site was created for people who want to learn from the ground up... I try not to bother people at the C site with questions that i know exist on the internet... the purpose of my site is to get hands on training... For example a few members from CProgramming visit my site and join us in IRC chat... then they hold lectures on differnt subjects... Once the newbs learn something new they can turn arround and teach the other newbs what they learned... Its a great place to ask question if you are just starting or want to learn C
As fo the design... that is the original design up their now... From the few opinion iv gotten here its not as bad as i thought. Although i personaly dont like it... When i enter my hompage it looks very plain... I want a fast loading page but with lots of content... And the main problem i am having is how do orgainize the contents to make it look very professional.
Maybe a better graphic design.
What would you guys change if you wanted to make it better?
12-26-2002, 01:00 PM
The logo and color scheme
12-26-2002, 01:07 PM
that what i hate about it also... Would you like to come up with a few ideas and show them to me... Then we will have a foundation to work from... Just so you know im partialy color blind so i have a tough time choosing a good color scheme and it makes for a hard type creating graphics also... Although i like how your flash page logo looks with all the vibrant colors and the little character guys... Make the site look modern playfull and professional... a color scheme such as you logo would go great with my site it think

Alrighty then, I'll get right onto it! :)
