View Full Version : 3 column layout troubles

Hello everyone. I am trying to get this layout together and im having trouble getting the whole 3 column thing to work out. I have 3 java related validation errors that I dont know how to fix. They are caused by my menu. The big problem is that my third column shoots off into the bottom of the page when I add the content need. I need the content from column one in all three columns. Also, I need each column to expand vertically if more content is added. Im still trying to learn how to use floats properly but its coming along slowly. Thanks for any help you can offer.

Java is NOT javascript. Don't confuse them. They are two totally different languages.

Perhaps this will help for your layout issues

As to your validation issues, when using a strict doctype, a lot of things aren't allowed. For example you can't use the target attribute in the document directly. You would need to add it using JS though I don't think the target attribute is even necessary in this case. Again with name. In XHTML names are replaces with ids. If you script uses the name of the image then you will need to change it to use IDs by using document.getElementById(). And finally the last error, there is no onload attribute for an image but in your case the onload is empty so its probably not necessary so just remove it.

IMO I think you should be doing more HTML/CSS tutorials as a lot of your questions can by answered by just doing a few tutorials yourself.

I am sorry to ask so many beginner questions. I just look at this forum as part of my learning. If I have a problem I search here first, then search the net, check out any resources I can find, look at similar pages source code, and then if I cant find anything that helps me ill validate my page as well I as I can then post a question here and continue looking for an answer. Sometimes I find my answers after posting and edit my post.

The link you just gave me was a great tutorial and a lot like others I have looked at. But, for some reason its not working for me. The welcome section looks good in IE7 but it overlaps the content div in FF. I have no clue why. And, the second column is out of place vertically in IE7. Sorry if I shouldnt be asking for help with this but what else can I do? Thanks for any pointers?
