1- Bill Gates has donated some 30 billion dollars... Slim barely comes close to 1 billion, and he donated most of it just to evade taxes, since he has stated that "donations don't help the world at all".

2- Slim controls 90% of land telephone lines in Mexico, and 80% of wireless.

The calculation for "richest man" is based off of net worth (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Net_worth), which does not use donations in its calculations. It's not how much money you have in the bank, but how much your assets are worth minus your debt. Regardless of how much Bill Gates donates, it doesn't subtract from his net worth.

Also, Slim's monopoly of the telephone market in Mexico is not his only source of capital, although it is his biggest money-maker. He's an investor and has his hands in literally everything.

Oracle chief executive Larry Ellison now holds the top spot. Based on the closing prices of Oracle and Microsoft stock, Ellison is worth $53 billion, compared to Gates’ $51.75 billion.

According to the most current Securities and Exchange Commission records of the technology titans' holdings, Gates, 44, is sitting on 742 million Microsoft shares worth $51.75 billion, based on today's closing price of $69.75. Ellison's 663 million shares of Oracle, meanwhile, are valued at $53 billion, based on today's closing price of $79.94.

The most common method for calculating the net worth of billionaires is to look at the millions of shares they hold in the public companies they founded. As a result, the calculations do not include other investments or assets these billionaires hold.

Indeed.

Monopolies can do a lot.

Bill gates only has 3 houses on boardwalk and park place. Carlos Slim has two hotels.

Think that is bad wait till he gets the railroads and utilities!

That is one Mexi who can.
