MathML news -- including a book

Yes, yes, I know MathML has to date largely been a subject on the edges of most people's interests (outside jkd and me, of course -- we're already eccentric, and this is a subject we both love), but I thought you might want to know about this.

(1) W3C is working on a revision to MathML 2.0, to bring it up to date, fix errata, and include an XML Schema document for MathML. It's currently a Working Draft.

I must admit i'm interested in this, but don't have a use for it in most of what I do. But it's good to know it's there.

I notice a CD accompanies the MathML Handbook containing several applications. I guess these are applications that generate MathML? It is necessary to download MathPlayer 1.0 for viewing MathML? Do you know if this is as readily available as Flash Player? Are there any reviews out about which application is the best (Mathtype, WebEQ)? The most user friendly.....which generates the least extraneous code...which is the most compatible with .asp?

Mozilla and Amaya can view Presentation MathML natively, though I have some serious issues with how Amaya renders some expressions. So, if you have NS7 on your computer, you can already view MathML. :)

As for generating MathML, that has actually been the focus of my attention the last few days, and am writing an article about it for my site...

And compatibility with ASP... that isn't a question. ASP just outputs whatever you tell it to, including MathML. Doesn't matter if it is on a dynamic page or a static page, as long as you get your mime-types right.

Aside: Jason, did you get an e-mail regarding XBL for layerEmu? Using Moz XML/DOM support, I'm edging closer to extending XLink, but alas, not at runtime, rather Document.onload
Anyway, if you didn't want to discuss it, that's fine, but I just wasn't sure if you received the e-mail or not(e-mail was via addy on layerEmu site).

As for a MathML example, I guess you can looky here:

That was the example I was going to focus on in my article. That beast was handcoded and took me 6-8 hours to write. The math itself took me about 5 minutes, and if I had chosen to write it up in Maple and export it, it might have taken an hour tops.

You can also see a more complete example (containing embedded Content MathML as well) on the introduction to my article at http://www.jasonkarldavis.com/scripts/mathmled/index.xhtml - just the introduction is up though, and the other links are 404's.

Incidentally, Amaya 8.0 has been released today.
