View Full Version : enableing java applets in ff 2.0.0.4
I have java enabled in FF 2.0.0.4 but a Govt website that I am loking at says that whilst I have a java capable browser, java apllets are not enabled. How can I enable java applets so that I can do in FF what I would otherwise do in ie.

When you go to Tools -> Options -> Content, are the Enable Java and Enable JavaScript boxes checked? If so, you should have no problem. If you have Java enabled, Java Applets should work. I just said to enable JavaScript also in case they use JavaScript to load anything.
Also, do you have the Java Runtime Environment installed on your computer? You need JRE to be able to run any Java-enabled websites and applications on your computer.
The only other thing I can think of is if they use any ActiveX controls to load something, which Firefox of course doesn't support being that ActiveX is MS proprietary (which is why IE will work with it).
One last test would be to give us the link (if its a public area) and see if other FF2 users can view it and then go from there.
One thing I've learned working for a government contractor is that you never know how those government sites are going to react to your browser. Many times, they're specifically IE-only websites. Our contract admins can only use IE6 for one of govt's secure websites (they're still "testing" IE7). So I wouldn't be surprised if this could be the case for you also if it's a secure area.

its funny, its a login area where anyone can sign into for free.
I rang them and it turns out that it is ie specific. if I want thier data set, I need about 6k GBP sop getting what I need manually seems to be preferable.
I do have the necessary software installed and the checkboxes you mentioned are checked also.
Thanks for your help.

Perhaps they are using an IE only way of checking to see if you have JRE support. It wouldn't be the first website I've heard of that said FF wouldn't work for no reason than their code only checked for IE.

Yea, that's typically what they do. They screen for IE and exclude all other browsers, regardless if they're capable or not.
