is the new Intel Pentium 4 3.06gHz better then any available AMD cpu?
also, if you have an amd 2200+ is that equivelent to an intel 2.2gHz ?

Although I havn't seen anything as of yet... I have heard from a couple of people that the 2.7Ghz AMD outperforms the 3.06Ghz P4... I have also heard, from these same sources (havn't seen anything again) that Intel included Multi-threading pipelines meanting that the processor could, in essence, parrallel process code... Since, however, AMD will soon be leaving the Desktop Processor race (they're gonna start focusing on Server-side and mini-computer processing), these conversations will go bye-bye... :(
Which is sad, tis truly is... M$ can't hold a monopoly for desktop software, yet, Intel can hold a processor monopoly... :(

As always Anandtech have full benchmarkresults on the latest cpu's: http://anandtech.com/cpu/showdoc.html?i=1746&p=1
Really you can't go wrong buying the top chip from either company, I personally favour Intel for their rock solid chipsets and choice of memory (you can use SDRAM, DDR, RDRAM or dual channel DDR).
AMD can't compete with Intel though lack of manufacturing and packaging facilities. They delayed the T'bred for months trying to get their 0.13micron process ready and have put their 'hammer chips back until late next year where they'll be soundly thrashed by Intel's 0/09micron Prescott core.
If AMD had any sense they'd have built rock solid chipsets when they were on top and had their hammer chips ready, ooh about now.

 But isn't AMD release their new desktop cpu, Athlon 64 soon? I haven't heard anything about them leaving the market. Where'd you hear it?

yes neither have i
i read the 486 on their wierd website otday
when it comes to gaming, I go with AMD, since their processors tend to have less slowdown in high-end 3D applications...but for business or professional applications, I use Intel, because of the solid chipsets; I get less errors that way ;)
