Can anyone tell me why the pages in IE and FF are different.

Of course they're different.

I'm not an expert at browsers, but the way I see it

Different browsers have different "dialects", they have different ways of "translating" HTML, and the results might turn out different in IE and FF, since they are coded differently.

This is a common problem among Web coders, you're gonna have to try to come with a compromise between the two browsers to find a exact results for both browsers, if not more browsers, or have very slight differences.

I would recommend that you run the page through the validator to tidy it code first.
