Help me to layout my page with CSS

Hi friends,

I'm new to CSS and want to restructure a website using CSS, which is currently structured using tables.

It has a lot of background images, and roughly follows a 4 column layout.

Here is a picuture showing the current layout

I'm using a single page to display all the contents corresponding each menu by changing the 'display' properties.

So the main content area height varies accordingly.

I want to adjust the other three columns' height as above.

I messed up with the positioning of these items.

Can I position them without using any tabels?

Please give some advice/links to do this...

Or can I assign the height of the other three columns as that of the main content height using javascript?

(My problem is how to get the hieght of a column which varies with text).

When I give 100% height to them, they go beyond footer, as they are positioned asolutely below the header (top:165px)

Essentially, in this technique, one uses a single vertically repeating background image to implement the background colors of the columns.
