I am trying to find out what the number '900' is supposed to do. Experimentally, it does not seem to be linear in its effect.

font: italic small-caps 900 12px arial

Thanks,

It would be the font color if you put the '#' sign in front of the '900', like:

font: italic small-caps #900 12px arial;

Hexidecimal numbers with 3 sets of repeating digits like, 990000 can be written in short-hand as 900 instead. The # tells the CSS interpreter that you are applying a color.

Yes, but this was taken from the official site and altering the number alters the font size, but not in a linear fashion.The code was cut and pasted and did not have the # with it.

W3C Cut and paste

<style type="text/css">
p
{
font: italic small-caps 900 12px arial
}
</style>

By the looks of the output from that editor it has something to do with how italisised (sp?) the text is. However, don't quote me on that because I've never seen this property used before?

If you change the number from 900 to 1000, the effect is enormous, size-wise'
If you reduce it to 800 the effect is barely noticeable.

Most peculiqueer!

Here we go again with you posting your link in threads.

Here is a good article on the shorthand properties of CSS
http://home.no.net/junjun/html/shorthand.html
Look at the shorthand properties for 'font'. It should clear some things up. This is what it would look like without using shorthand

font-style: italic;
font-variant: small-caps;
font-weight: 900;
font-size: 12px;
font-family: arial;

Thank you for the explanation. I am surprised that as it came from a teaching site, that it was not made clear. Then I would not have troubled you all.

I do not understand this rather unkind remark
