I would very much appreciate any help with this issue.

Basically, I have a Samsung V25 Laptop with built-in Wireless Card. I have also got a Belkin Wireless Router - "ADSL2+ Modem with Wireless-G Router". ( http://www.hardwareplus.com.tr/content_images2/dfqh4rt1llqf12sx60fkpb9yizcmvaq0.jpg ). It's very similar to that, except I have only one aerial.

However, when going through the 'Quick Start Guide' and getting to the step to open my browser and go to '192.168.2.1' it doesn't connect and just displays the server error message...not connected...blah blah...you know the one. After going to that page i'm supposed to be given a Wizard to setup my router. But, obviously i'm not getting that.

The guide states that if I don't get to the Wizard then my computer may have an IP address manually applied to the card??? It says i need to go into my Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) settings and enter my IP Address, SubNet Mask, Default Gateway, Preferred DNS Server and Alternate DNS Server.

Now, when I go into 'Network Connections' in the CP the details pane down the left-hand side shows my IP as 169.254.151.97 and SubNet Mask as 255.255.0.0 but no Gateway/DNS Servers??

What am I doing wrong? I've not had a chance to enter my username/password from my ISP (Virgin Media) at this stage.

Help is much appreciated on this problem, spent ages trying different values in the IP settings - but not got very far. I've resert the router from the button on the back as well.

What is the point in helping you if you don't respond to your original posts? http://www.codingforums.com/showthread.php?t=113895

You can't setup your router through a wireless connection. You need to be directly plugged into using an ethernet cable to setup it up. After that you should be able to connect wireless once setup.

Hi, sorry, I had hoped I had structured my question better.

I have a ethernet cable (yellow) connected to my network card so i'm not trying to connect to my router wirelessly. I am trying to do it by the manual, but not getting very far.

Why is it when i go to the address I can't get to it?

192.168.2.1 (Belkin Router)

The most common problem when trying to do that setup, is connecting the CAT5 cable that goes from the router to the computer to the Internet Port(WAN) on the router, instead of doing it on one of the four other ports. So make sure no cable is going to the Internet Port on the Router.

Also, make sure that on network connection properties your computer is set to obtain an IP address automatically

The router isn't giving you an IP address from DHCP. If it's a brand new router, it'll have DHCP enabled on it by default -what happens if you manually set a static IP address?

I'd check the cable to ensure that it isn't dodgy firstly. If you're certain that the cable doesn't have any faults, do any other computers successfully claim an IP from the router's DHCP?

Set the address manually to 192.168.2.2 with the default gateway and primary dns server set to 192.168.2.1 (the router) and then see whether you can 1) ping the router and 2) get into the admin panel. If you can't, and you're adament that the cable is ok, then you've probably got a dodgy router on your hands. I wouldn't personally call Belkin routers the best around...

Also, I do believe my mate's got the same router as you, and he *was* having the same problem (except his wouldn't even start up properly) -a factory reset using the small push in button on the back (hold for 30 seconds I think) cured the problem and now it works fine.

Edit @ Dan - I thought the internet port (connection which the phone line plugs into) was RJ11 and therefore smaller than RJ45, which is the plug standard of Cat5e etc?

Cheers.
