View Full Version : How Should I Create The Combat Portion Of My Web Game?

I am creating a geopolitic browser based webgame using mySQL/PHP and JS. It is a present day RTS/MMORPG.

I have been trying to figure out ways to have the player take his army into battle to fight an NPC army.

The setting of the game is present day. I have created the build and training parts of the game (where you build troops, tanks, planes, etc) as well as all of the training (tech upgrades, skill upgrades, etc).

Now I am trying to figure out a good way to do the combat system.

basically you are the leader of your nation. You assign your troops into squads, platoons, companies and brigades. One assigned you enter the battle against the NPC enemy of your choice.

Damage is much like DnD. A pistol does 1d4, a rifle does 1d8, a tank does 4d10 damage and a nuclear bomb does a hell of a lot more.

I am unsure how to do the actual combat. If you were the player how would you like the combat system to be set up? What kind of a UI would you prefer if you were the player? Does anyone have any decent ideas? Are there cool combat systems you are aware of that are currently out there for JS/PHP web based browser games?

Remember, that I am only using PHP and JS (Yahoo! UI Library). No Macromedia Flash or any other web development packages.

All input is welcome.
