i am noobie i downloaded a windows 98 reformat cd of the internet and i am trying to fix my X"s computer. right now since i used a 98 restore disk for a ibm think pad laptop i have a desktop which thinks its a laptop with a pci card slot in the side of it so if someone could help me and tell me how to wipe the hardrive completely

What's the spec of the computer? Why do you want to use Windows 98 over something like 2000 or XP?

If you want to reformat and reinstall completly, you'll need to have an installation CD that is bootable. You'll need to set your BIOS to boot from your cd drive first, then reformat and reinstall throught the Windows setup program on the hard disk.
