Does any one have it? I have seen a lot of things on digg about hacks so it must have some potential.
Someone already got OS X on it.

Chill on the posts! Editing is your friend, please use it.

So I take it you have hacked it. I got a 360 so I do not really have a use for it, but the apple TV has some great potential.

I achieved what Apple TV does (except for the wirelessness, which I don't really care about) for less than $30 (which is one-tenth the price of Apple TV if I remember right). I just bought and s-video cable, connected it from my computer to my TV, and made the TV my secondary monitor. I also bought a headphone-RCA adapter wire for audio. That I can either connect to my stereo, or my TV (although I just leave it in my stereo). And I can connect my iPod to my stereo with that wire (no need for a dock).

A lot of times, you can save hundreds of dollars by just buying simple adapters and wires.

I see where your nickname comes from oh smart one. :)

What does the apple tv actually offer that is new by the way?

You can watch tv and play dvds with your computer anyway, you can hook up a TV to your computer, you can hook up your tv's sound input or your 7.1 audio system or whatever to your computer. You can hook up iPods to your computer and you can watch podcasts on your computer (granted I have never actually watched a podcast, I don't see what all the fuss is about. I also don't own an iPod. I own a different MP3 player [many iPod owners would have me believe an iPod isn't the same thing as an MP3 player]).

So what is the advantage to having an appletv?

I think it's just an ego thing. I work with people who think they are the cat's meow simply because they use a Mac. So I guess it's "designer TV" for the apple crowd. But watch out! If you wire up your computer to your own TV, you might be copyright-infringing on apple somehow... that might be worth a lawsuit...

What stinks about the apple TV is that you can only play stuff you get on itunes and they do not have HD content.

Very good idea though.

Yeah. Apple does not believe in open sourcing. That's actually why the IBM-PC took off like it did; they opened up the machine to third-party vendors...

Can you imagine the anti-monopoly lawsuits if that was what Microsoft did?
