Event.observe() for clicking scroll wheel and thus activating autoscroll?

I want to run a function right when a user activates auto scroll by clicking his scroll wheel and I want to run another function when he/she deactivates the auto scroll.

What call should I make?

JavaScript has no ability to access the mouse scroll wheel.
